Reporting a person or business that is deliberately polluting and/or negligently addressing a pollution source on their property can help reduce the concentration of pollutants entering our streams, rivers and lakes. Even though many of the sources of stormwater pollution may be caused “unintentionally” by our daily behavior, there is a fine line between being unaware of one’s actions and being deliberate and/or negligent.
Businesses and developers on the most part are or should be aware of the regulations and provisions stipulated in each municipality’s ordinances. The public is also required to follow the regulations and provisions established in each municipality. By participating in unlawful behaviors such as simple actions as failing to pick up your pet’s waste, a common ordinance in many municipalities, penalties can be enforced. Theses ordinances are enacted to promote the health and well being of each community.
For this reason it is encouraged that the public report activities or sources that may lead to unhealthy conditions in our communities.
As a citizen interested in eliminating stormwater pollution, you are encouraged to report waste hot spots, spills, clogged catch basins, illegal dumping, and illicit connections or discharges into the streets or storm drain system to your local municipality officials.
- “Hot spots” are areas of potential contaminants that could wash down a storm drain and into a stream when it rains.
- Clogged catch basins can allow for localized flooding or send unwanted debris down the storm sewer system.
- Illegal dumping can allow toxic chemicals to enter our waterways. Illegal dumping is the dumping of anything other than rainwater down a storm drain.
Illicit connections refers to any connection to the storm drain system that is not permitted or any legitimate connection that is used for illegal discharge. For more stormwater terms refer to the link, Glossary of Terms.
